About the Event
The Yachtmaster Course qualifications are internationally recognised and respected throughout the yachting world. They remain an excellent test of our ability to skipper a vessel in a safe, knowledgeable and efficient manner. From a commercial viewpoint these exams are mandatory for anyone wishing to take charge of a vessel and be responsible for others at sea. From a personal view these exams offer a serious challenge and are a true test of your competence at sea.
Yachtmaster Coastal Course Preparation
Onboard, emphasis will be on polishing up; close quarter sailing, boat handling skills, efficient sailing, skippering ability, passage planning, chart work and navigation. We will assess your areas for development and concentrate on a thorough airing of all exam requirements. The week is fairly intensive, with your instructor testing your depth of knowledge and asking for demonstrations of sound seamanship. The Yachtmaster Coastal course is designed to hone in on and polish candidate’s knowledge, skill and competencies, we do not expect to deliver new skill training during the preparation week. Candidates should bring their personal log books detailing the required experience.
The Yachtmaster Coastal Course content:
Positioning, The Magnetic Compass, Tides, Tidal Streams, Buoyage, Lights, Pilotage, GPS and Chart Plotters, Echo Sounders, Logs, Deck Log, Meteorology, Rule of the Road, Safety at Sea, Navigation in Restricted Visibility, Passage Planning, Marine Environment.
In each section the examiner will expect to see the candidate take full responsibility for the management of the yacht and crew.
Qualifying passages and seatime should have been logged in the ten years preceding the exam, seatime that is more than ten years old does not qualify. All qualifying sea time and passages must be gained on vessels appropriate to the type of exam i.e. gained in sailing vessels for a sail exam and power vessels for a power exam.
All candidates must hold a valid First Aid Certificate and a Radio Operators Licence.
It is essential that all candidates satisfy all prerequisite mileage, experience and courses prior to taking the exam.
Mileage being claimed for the purpose of an exam should be relevant miles and on appropriate vessels. At least 50 % of the minimum sea time for Yachtmaster Exam candidates must have been accrued on vessels less than 24m.
Please note that all sea time gained during this course will count towards the pre-exam requirements.
